Bounce Rate (Email)

Definition

The percentage of sent emails that were not delivered — either because the email address doesn't exist (hard bounce) or because the receiving server temporarily rejected the message (soft bounce).

Email bounce rate measures how many of your outbound emails failed to reach their destination. It’s a critical deliverability metric because a high bounce rate signals to email providers that you’re sending to unverified or low-quality lists — and they penalise your domain reputation accordingly.

Hard bounces occur when the email address doesn’t exist or the domain has no mail server. These are permanent failures. Every hard bounce damages your sending reputation. A list should be verified before sending to catch hard bounces before they happen.

Soft bounces occur when the recipient’s mailbox is temporarily unavailable — full inbox, server outage, out-of-office limits. These are usually transient and retry automatically.

Acceptable bounce rates

Industry standard: keep hard bounce rate under 2–3%. Above that, email service providers start flagging your account and filtering more of your mail into spam — including to contacts who would have received it fine.

For cold email campaigns, list verification tools (ZeroBounce, NeverBounce, Hunter) should be used before any send to reduce bounce rate to under 2%.

Why it matters in outbound

A cold email campaign sending to unverified lists with a 10%+ bounce rate will see its sending domain’s reputation crater within weeks. Deliverability drops, open rates drop, and the campaign produces no results — not because the copy was bad, but because the emails aren’t reaching inboxes.

Bounce rate is a deliverability signal that feeds into domain reputation. Data enrichment and list verification are the pre-send steps that keep bounce rate manageable.
