ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
Also called: Ideal Customer Profile, Target Customer, ICP Definition
Definition
A detailed description of the type of company most likely to buy your product or service, get value from it quickly, stay a customer, and generate strong revenue — used to focus every outbound effort.
The Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is the single most important document in B2B outbound. It answers the question: who, exactly, should we be reaching out to? Without a sharp ICP, outbound becomes spray-and-pray. With one, every prospect list, sequence, and message can be built around the specific characteristics of companies most likely to buy.
A complete ICP covers:
- Firmographic criteria: Company size (employee count, revenue), industry, geography, funding stage, business model (B2B vs B2C, product vs services)
- Technographic criteria: What software/tools they use (e.g., using Salesforce means they have a formalised sales org; not using a CRM means they don’t)
- Trigger events: What happens at the company right before they’d consider buying — hiring signal, funding announcement, product launch, leadership change, compliance event
- Decision-maker titles: Who needs to be in the conversation for a deal to move — and who can say no
- Pain points: What specific business problem do they have that your product/service solves
Why ICP precision matters in outbound
Every percentage point of ICP tightness improves reply rates, qualification rates, and close rates downstream. A campaign targeting “B2B SaaS companies with 50–200 employees, Series A–B, using HubSpot, hiring 2+ salespeople” will dramatically outperform one targeting “B2B tech companies.”
Related concepts
ICP feeds into TAM sizing, prospect list building, and copy personalisation. Revisiting your ICP quarterly — especially after reviewing which closed deals were your best customers — is a high-leverage activity.
