Roles

RevOps (Revenue Operations)

Also called: Revenue Operations, RevOps, GTM Operations

Definition

A business function that aligns sales, marketing, and customer success operations under a shared revenue goal — managing the tech stack, data, processes, and reporting that power the go-to-market team.

Revenue Operations (RevOps) emerged as companies realised that sales, marketing, and customer success teams were each running their own disconnected systems, data, and processes — creating blind spots in the customer journey and friction in the revenue machine. RevOps brings them under one operational function.

A RevOps team is responsible for: CRM administration and data integrity, sales process design and enforcement, marketing-to-sales handoff workflows, tech stack procurement and integration, forecasting and pipeline reporting, and performance analytics across the full funnel.

What RevOps does that sales ops didn’t

Traditional sales ops focused on the sales team. RevOps spans the full revenue lifecycle: how marketing generates and qualifies leads, how sales converts them, how customer success retains and expands them, and how all three functions share data and communicate. The goal is eliminating gaps between these handoffs.

RevOps in outbound-focused companies

For outbound-heavy B2B companies, RevOps is typically responsible for: SDR-to-AE handoff process design, CRM integration with sequencing tools (Outreach, Instantly, Apollo), pipeline stage definitions and qualification criteria, activity and conversion rate dashboards, and data hygiene processes (deduplication, enrichment, validation).

When to hire your first RevOps person

Most companies benefit from RevOps thinking before the first RevOps hire — one founder or GTM leader who owns data and processes. A dedicated RevOps hire makes sense around 10–15 people in go-to-market roles, or when CRM data integrity problems are visibly costing deals.

RevOps sits adjacent to and enables the SDR function, AE function, and marketing function. The CRM is the primary tool they administer and maintain.
